Being a Small Business Owner. . .

2 min read

If you haven't guessed already, I started a small business, Hecate's Healing Apothecary. Well, it's an online herbal business, and I have been selling at local outdoor markets and craft fairs. This is my 1st year doing a full season of vending.

I must say. It is a lot to embrace.

I have learned some skills, and I am still learning how to run a small business. I know one of the main things I should have done at the beginning of the year was open a 2nd bank account for sales earnings, so I could better track all business-related things. But better late than never.

Making the content, working on the website, making products, marketing the products, making labels and business-related documents, being a vendor, selling the items, cashiering, and everything in between is a lot to master and balance.

Let me tell you, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything else. The skills I'm learning and honing right now as a small business owner are invaluable. I'm learning things I've always wanted to learn through jobs.

Sadly, I wasn't given a chance to learn these skills through a regular job. It would have been nice, though, to be around people who have been in it in the long run. But it's kind of hard to get a job like this (sales associate, customer representative, etc.) because all I've been able to do is Work in Hospitality, in the housekeeping department.

That's where the obstacle comes in. Listing my skills as a small business owner on my resume seems off-putting, and I've had a hard time getting a part-time or full-time job because I thought running and owning a small business would be valuable.

I guess that's wishful thinking.

That's the other part of being a small business owner: learning about financing. I am funding my own business while paying everyday life expenses, looking for grants and a steady-paying job.

I knew what I signed up for. Like I said, I am learning the ins and outs of having a small business, and I'll keep going and growing.

So until the next blog, stay safe and stay creative.
